Original Medicare or Traditional Medicare consists of two parts.
Part A is Hospital insurance
This helps pay for
inpatient services, hospital stays and skilled nursing facilities
Part B is Medical insurance
This helps cover the cost of doctors' visits, outpatient care and durable medical equipment
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older and for those under the age of 65 with long term disabiities.
When Can I Enoll in Medicare?
INITIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
Your 7 month window begins 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday.
Part B Coverage will take effect the first of the month after you enroll.
Part A Coverage generally will be backdated to the month you turned 65
GENERAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
January 1 to March 31 of each year. Your coverage will begin the month following your enrollment.
OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD
The Medicare Open Enrollment period occurs every fall during which time existing Medicare enrollees can evaluate their current Medicare plan and make changes if they choose to do so.
This enrollment period funs from October 15 to December 7 each year with coverage beginning on January 1.
SPECIAL ENROLLMENT PERIOD
If you or your spouse have medical coverage at your job when you became eligible, you can enroll anytime while you are still covered and for another eight months after you lose your group coverage or stop working.
